I'm pretty sure that all of the knights are male. It's one of the points I like about Pretear - the fact that it's a gender-inverted harem anime. I like that sort of perversity. In small doses.

Personally, I think that Pretear could have used some more filler - there aren't nearly enough batting-around-monsters episodes before we get into the ending story. Somewhere between Wedding Peach and Pretear has got to be the happy medium for fighting-magical-girls anime.

For what it's worth, I'd agree Pretear is quite good. It's not better than CCS, but I'd be hard pressed to think of another magical girl show I like better.

It takes the genre, executes the conventions cleanly, and has actual characters, who actually drive the plot.

I agree with Steven, they're a fun bunch. As for Pretear...maybe I'll have to give it a second look. I mean, I heard two words and ran away screaming:

"Wearable Bishounen"

*cringe* I suppose I shouldn't deny the possibility that it's good, since I strongly suggest people look past the breasts in Divergence Eve, and the yuri in Simoun, to see the quality in those shows...

The "How do the men and women get together" story doesn't really unroll quite the way you think it does. And anyway, that's not actually the focus of the series. The primary focus of the series is, first, the Paksis and the Vandreads, and second, Dita's "Evil Aliens": where did they come from, and what do they want?

The real pleasure in Vandread comes from the characters and watching them interact and change. Some of them are annoying as all hell at the beginning, such as Bart. But by the end of the second series Bart has redeemed himself in the eyes of the audience, and in fact so has everyone else. (In my opinion, Bart has the single best scene in the entire series.)

It's unfortunate that you stopped in the middle of the second episode. I think that by the end of the second episode you'd have been hooked.

I have rewatched Vandread several times since I got it, and in fact I'm probably going to watch it again tomorrow. Not because of the story, or the gizmos, though those things help, but because I like those characters so much and enjoy spending time with them.

While I find the idea of Top Ten lists kind of silly, in a way--they always tell you more about the lister than the subject at hand--I can't resist them.

So, my top five anime, in order:

1. Noir
2. Haibane Renmei
3. Pretear
4. Sugar, A Little Snow Fairy
5. Divergence Eve/Misaki Chronicles

There are lots and lots of good ones out there. My pile of unwatched ones slowly diminishes...which means it's time to buy more!

I'm glad you're recommending this in detail - since that's about as close as I have been able to come to watching anything, these days. It's been years since I've seen any anime. You said you put this at number 3. What's number one?
