Pete, I’m not sure I have any fresh insights to offer. If one happens to jump at me, I’ll try to pop it in.

Also, I tend to write waaaay too much.

Finally, I’m not really sure I should be used as a resource to find what’s good out there–I don’t really know myself, half the time. But if anyone finds the junk I write useful, well, that’s certainly a win…for someone.

No, please don’t do reviews outside of capsule reviews. In other words, “it’s not that EVA is bad, necessarily; I would describe it as “off-putting,” though” is an instant classic, but anything much bigger – probably not so much. There are so many review sites, it’s becoming a liability. I would rather appreciate someone providing fresh insights.

I’m an anime newbie too! I’ve also been studying SDB’s reviews and suggestions. I was actually warned by a couple of folks when I asked “where should I start” that just because they loved a show didn’t mean I would as well. My first big series looks as though it may be Card Captor Sakura (one of Steven’s faves). And I’ve been dabbling with the idea of Cowboy Bebop. I’m begining to realize that part of what makes anime so confusing to us is that it really covers the entire gamut of genres. If you asked me what I thought the greatest movies ever made were, I’m sure most folks would have differing views on that as well. So I’ve begun to think that a reasonable approach might be to start out with a respected title from each genre and see how I feel from there. It really is quite an adventure! I look forward to reading your reviews.

While I though Noir was good I didn’t think it was that great. I thought the overall plot was kind of weird (granted true of most anime) but most problematic for me was the lack of explanation of the ladies uber fighting skill. I don’t mind uber fighting chicks as long as there is an explanation for their uberness (I happened to love Buffy for this and other reasons).

Some anime I’d highly recommend are Last Exile and Gatekeepers 21. The animation in both are great, have interesting characters and an involved plotline. Last Exile had a more epic story while I found the protagonist of Gatekeepers 21 one of the more fascinating characters in anime.

Anyone who likes Sugar is okay in my book. It doesn’t matter if you’re an anime fan or not; it’s just a really good show.

Actually, you can get the Nadesico “Essential Anime” release, if I’m not mistaken. (Or rather, I know it exists, my comp copy is on my dresser, I’m just not certain -it- is still in print.)

I’ve been thinking about “Noir”. I’ve been thinking about “Divergence Eve / Misaki Chronicles” too, but for an entirely different reason.

What I saw of “Martian Successor Nadesico” I liked. Always meant to go back, too. Other series popped up.

Haibane was the first anime that I watched with the sound on…oh so many years ago (but before I turned to manga).
I would suggest Princess Mononoke. Why?
I really can’t say other than I stayed up three nights in a row with my eyes all big watching it over and over. First with sound (English) , then without then with subtitles then back to English again.

Alot of poorly dubbed anime have horrible voice choices for the US version, that’s one reason why Anime Fans are so retarded when it comes to watching in Japanese. Or at least that’s how I’ve taken it…
